Champions Tour Event Building a Tradition For Houston Area
HOUSTON (September 11, 2006) – When the Administaff Small Business Classic became a reality three short years ago, it brought the Champions Tour back to the Houston area for the first time in nearly 10 years.
Quickly, the event has emerged as one of the finest on the Champions Tour schedule. Past champions Larry Nelson and Mark McNulty, along with some of the Champions Tour’s hottest stars, are making plans to return for the third edition of the Administaff Small Business Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare at Augusta Pines Golf Club on October 9-15.
In 2004, with Hale Irwin and Nelson closing the 54-hole competition with a major championship-style playoff, the tone was set. A year later, McNulty impressed with a memorable final round.
Arnold Palmer will return for the third year, making Houston a stop on his limited playing schedule. With Lee Trevino and others, the game’s legends will once again walk the fairways of Augusta Pines.
“The support of the players the first three years has been tremendous,” said Tournament Director Bryan Naugle. “I cannot say enough for the volunteers and our corporate partners, who have dedicated so much of their time and resources to assure that we have one of the best stops on the Champions Tour. Our future looks very good and I am proud the Houston area has embraced this fall golf classic.”
With four weeks remaining until the first tee is hit, many of the game’s greats have committed to the $1.6 million tournament, including Curtis Strange, Loren Roberts, Hale Irwin, Ben Crenshaw, Fuzzy Zoeller, Craig Stadler and Tom Kite. ”
2-2-2 Third Year
Proceeds from the Administaff Small Business Classic presented by UnitedHealthcare will benefit local charities, including the George and Barbara Bush Endowment for Innovative Cancer Research at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Golfers Against Cancer and Junior Achievement of Southeast Texas.
